The REACh Regulation
"Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals"
The REACh (Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals) chemicals regulation entered into force on 1 June 2007. It replaced a range of different EU directives relating to the evaluation and categorisation of secondary raw materials within the EU.
The objective of the REACh Regulation is ensuring a high level of protection for human health and the environment as well as improving the competitiveness and power to innovate of the chemical industry within the EU.
This Regulation obliges the industry to verify the safety of all chemicals used. Since 1 December 2008 only registered substances may be manufactured and marketed within the EU. A period totalling eleven years has been specified for registering the roughly 30,000 chemical substances affected throughout the EU, divided into three phases according to the tonnage manufactured or imported per annum.
No Data - No Market
The higher the quantity, the greater the information requirement about the substance in question. The substances must be assessed in terms of their risk potential as part of chemical safety reports, based on data submitted.
You as a user will be informed about the resultant safe handling information in the form of a safety data sheet.
GHS Labelling
In addition to REACh, another change to the law relating to chemicals will soon take effect.
A globally harmonised system of labelling chemicals going by the acronym GHS (Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals) is to be launched.
Within the European Union this system will be implemented as part of Regulation 1272/2009/EU. In the European Union the designation CLP (Classification, Labelling, Packaging) is also commonly used for this purpose.
LEED and DGNB
Collect DGNB + LEED points with KEMPEROL products
Planners and architects, who focus on the issue of sustainable construction, will already be familiar with the abbreviations LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) and DGNB (German Sustainable Building Council). These involve systems for classifying green construction and independent certification programmes for assessing the sustainability of buildings. Assessments of products used to build it are incorporated into the overall assessment of any building.
